ASHTABULA — Police say teenagers responsible for a copper theft at the old Carlisle’s building were nabbed Thursday.
Three teens, two males and one female, were caught after the owner of a downtown business reported a suspicious vehicle at 11 p.m. Thursday in the 4500 block of Main Avenue. The store owner saw the teens breaking into a locked door and boarded-up window on the ground level of the building facing Park Avenue.
“She saw the guys and hollered, ‘I’m calling the police!’’’ Ashtabula Police Sgt. John Koski said. “They took off in their vehicle.”
Thanks to the business owner’s description of the vehicle, police spotted it shortly thereafter in the vicinity of Adams and 52nd avenues, Koski said. At that point, only two of three perpetrators — the female and one male — were inside the vehicle, police said. When police confronted the twosome, the male became uncooperative.
“He gave his father’s name and Social Security number,” Koski said. “He was later charged with falsification.”
The female was cooperative and was charged with complicity, he said.
“She was the driver,” Koski said.
Police were led to the other male suspect, as well as stolen copper, police said.
“We also recovered tools, a lantern and a tool belt,” Koski said.
Police further charged the uncooperative male with breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools and tampering with evidence, records show.
The second male was charged with breaking and entering and possession of criminal tools, records show.
The teens’ names are being withheld because they are minors.
Koski warns anyone considering breaking into the old Carlisle’s building: “It’s full of black mold, and it’s hazardous.”
