CONNEAUT — A North Kingsville youth camp hopes to re-establish some lost beach area while protecting a stretch of Lake Erie shoreline.
The Harry E. Sheldon Calvary Camp, a faith-based recreation area on Lake Road at the North Kingsville-Conneaut line, is seeking permission to install revetment and breakwaters to help create and protect a small beach. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency held a public hearing on the matter Thursday night at the Conneaut Public Library. The camp has asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for permits needed to do the shoreline work. The Army Corps will not act until the project has the blessing of Ohio EPA.
A camp spokesman at the hearing said the goal of the pending project is to create and then protect a small beach to assist the facility’s water activities. If all the necessary permits are approved, the project will move forward once money is raised, the spokesman said.
The camp wants to install 380 linear feet of new armor-stone revetment to protect the shoreline, and build two 87-feet by 23-feet detached armor-stone breakwaters to maintain beach sand, and a 60-foot by 30-foot armor stone groin to retain the sand.
“The overall project purpose is to provide long-term shoreline protection and to maintain a permanent sand beach area for use by their camp,” according to an Army Corps public notice.
The Sheldon Calvary Camp has been a lakefront fixture for more than 70 years.
