MADISON TOWNSHIP — Driving home on Route 20 early Tuesday morning, a Madison Township woman was followed into a dark parking lot by a man who struck her vehicle with his truck and fled the scene, Madison township Police Chief Leonard DelCalzo said.
The woman told police she was driving east on North Ridge Road just after 12:30 a.m. when a white man driving a full-sized, dark-colored pickup truck kept entering her lane of travel. Distracted, the woman “missed her turn to where she lives,” she told police, and pulled into the Western Reserve Hardware parking lot to turn around, DelCalzo said.
“The man in the truck followed her into the parking lot and hit the driver’s side door of her Chevrolet Impala with the front end of his truck and then he just kept going,” DelCalzo said.
The woman was not injured and her car was not seriously damaged, DelCalzo said, and the reasons for the collision are unclear.
“Without knowing what the circumstances are or who the person was, it is really hard to say what the reasons are for this crash,” he said. “Maybe the man was drunk and was just following a car. Your guess is just as good as mine.”
Police reports indicate the woman left her car in the parking lot and walked home to call police.
DelCalzo said the victim did the right thing by getting off the road if she felt she was in danger while driving.
“But I probably would have picked a place to turn around that was open, maybe like a gas station or 24-hour store — a place that would be well lit,” he said.
DelCalzo said he encourages anyone who feels threatened on the road to dial 911 if they have cell phone. Drivers should also try to get a license plate number and accurate description of the other vehicle involved, he said.
“An officer will respond,” he said.
DelCalzo said officers are looking for a dark colored, possibly black full-size pickup truck with front-end damage. The suspect was described as a white man in his 40’s wearing a baseball cap, police reports show.
The victim said the driver headed westbound on Route 20 when he fled the scene, police reports show.
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to call the Madison Township Police Department at (440) 428-2116.
