KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — A man wanted by Pennsylvania State Police on numerous felony warrants was found dead in a Kingsville motel room Friday morning, authorities said.
John Duralia, 46, who had spent the past week at the Kingsville Motel on Route 193 near Interstate 90, died from a self-inflicted shot fired from a handgun, said Richard Mongell, chief investigator for the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.
The county’s special weapons and tactics team entered the room shortly after 10:30 a.m. and found Duralia inside, according to reports.
The incident began around 8 a.m., when PSP contacted the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department after learning Duralia was at the motel. Learning that Duralia was wanted on felony charges and possibly armed, the department mobilized the SWAT team, said Sheriff William Johnson.
When nobody in the room answered knocks on the door or phone calls to the room, the decision was made to enter it by force. A SWAT member broke a window, and officers peering inside glimpsed Duralia’s body, officers said.
A distraught Duralia reportedly contacted a woman around 5:30 a.m., Johnson said. The woman tried to call Duralia back, but there was no answer, he said. Troopers traced the call back to the motel, and PSP “asked us to assist,” Johnson said.
It appears Duralia shot himself a short time after he placed the 5:30 a.m. call and before deputies arrived at his door, Mongell said.
Duralia was wanted on aggravated assault charges stemming from a domestic incident Monday in Atlantic, Pa., said Cpl. Mark Zaleski of the PSP’s Erie post. Atlantic is a small community a short distance from Meadville, Pa.
Troopers had learned Duralia was preparing to surrender to authorities soon on the charges, possibly sometime Friday, Zaleski said.
