ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP— The H1N1 vaccination plan will proceed on schedule this week in the Buckeye Local District, with Ridgeview Elementary and Edgewood Senior High students receiving the vaccine today.
Superintendent Nancy Williams said Tuesday that the Ashtabula County Health Department confirmed with the district earlier in the day that a supply of injectable vaccine would be available for the program. There was a point last week at which it looked as if there would not be sufficient supply to take care of the public-school vaccination programs.
Williams said she did not have any numbers on how many permission slips have been returned at each building or what percentage of the students would be opting for injections or the nasal spray. She did know that more than 200 Edgewood students had returned slips. A reminder call was made to parents Monday evening and was expected to generate more response.
The district started notifying parents of the program Oct. 22. Three letters have been sent home with students, and the permission slips and information are posted on the district’s Web site (buckeyeschools.info).
The entire program is being run by the county health department with assistance from the district’s school nurses. There is no cost to the district or parents.
Williams said vaccinations at the elementary buildings have been scheduled for afternoons in the event parents want to be present. Ridgeview vaccinations start 1 p.m. today; at Kingsville and North Kingsville, the start time is 1 p.m. Friday. The vaccinations at the high school are scheduled to begin 8 a.m. today. At Braden Junior High, they start 8 a.m. Friday.
Williams said the district experienced a substantial increase in absenteeism during the past two weeks. At one point last week, it approached 25 percent at Kingsville Elementary. The rate had dropped to 7.5 percent on Tuesday. The high school peaked last week, at around 14 percent, she said.
Normal absenteeism rates are 5 to 6 percent for this time of year.
