JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County residents soon may be able to pay fines or other payments to county departments by way of credit cards.
The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners, Tuesday, approved a resolution authorizing the acceptance of payments by credit cards for expenses owed to the county. The resolution authorizes various county departments to accept credit card payments, but the departments are not mandated to do so, said Lisa Hawkins, commissioners’ board clerk.
Departments eligible to accept credit-card payments include the Ashtabula County Auditor’s Office, Ashtabula County Treasurer’s Office, Ashtabula County Engineer’s Office, Ashtabula County Recorder’s Office, Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office, Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court, Eastern and Western County courts, Ashtabula County Juvenile Court, Ashtabula County Probate Court, Ashtabula County Youth Detention Center, Ashtabula County Building Department, Ashtabula County Department of Environmental Services, Ashtabula County Recycling and Community Services Department, and the Ashtabula County Health Department.
“We’re not going to secure more credit cards for our personal use,” said Commissioner Joseph Moroski. “This authorizes people in the county to accept payments by credit card.”
The effort is something the commissioners are doing in conjunction with the county treasurer’s office to help money flow into the county’s coffers a little more easily, Moroski said.
Commissioners also approved a resolution to advertise for proposals from entities that provide credit-card payment services.
