OAKWOOD — An Orwell firefighter was killed Monday morning on his way to work on Interstate 271.
William J. Judd, 47, of Noe Avenue in Orwell, was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-vehicle crash. The accident occurred at about 6:30 a.m. just before the Interstate 480 split, said Oakwood Police Dispatcher Sara Kozlowski. He worked in Richfield.
Judd was southbound on I-271 when his truck went off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail, ripping off 270 feet of it, police said.. The truck then traveled through the median, coming to a stop just before entering the northbound lanes. Traffic was backed up for some time, making the morning commute difficult in both northbound and southbound lanes.
Kozlowski said police are unsure at this time what caused Judd to go off the road. Judd was wearing his seatbelt, police said.
“It’s possible it could be health related,” she said.
The Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy. A spokesperson at the office said preliminary results will be available in a few days because of Monday’s holiday.
Orwell Village Fire Chief Joe Albergo did not wish to discuss Judd’s service to the fire department. Albergo did not know exactly how long Judd has been volunteering with the department.
“It was a lot of years,” he said. “I’d have to go back and look at the dates. Everything’s real sketchy right now.”
