Plant closes Dec. 5 Channel switches production to Chesterland By STACY MILLBERG - Staff Writer - smillberg@starbeacon.com Star Beacon JEFFERSON — Channel Products Inc., a leading supplier to the gas appliance industry, announced it will close the doors to its manufacturing facility on West Ashtabula Street Dec. 5.
President Dave Wozencraft said the company will consolidate with its Chesterland facility, where the corporate headquarters is located. Wozencraft said the decision to close is related to the general business of the facility. “The conditions are such that it is necessary in order to reduce costs,” he said. According to the spouse of an employee, who did not wish to be named, employees were notified last week the facility was closing. Employees reportedly received letters outlining their options. The Jefferson plant employs 25 full-time people and from time-to-time there are temporary employees hired as well, Wozencraft said. All full-time employees were given the option to transfer to Chesterland, he said. Wozencraft was not at liberty to discuss the details of what positions were offered to the employees, including those in supervisory positions. Channel Products has been in business for more than 30 years. The Jefferson plant, formerly General Electric, has been in operation for 20 years, he said. According to the company’s Web site, Channel Products is a leading design and manufacturing company that supplies electronic and piezoceramic ignitors, gas ignition safety controls, electrodes and sensor assemblies, wire assemblies and accessories to the gas appliance industry worldwide. The two facilities produce a combined 9 million ignitors and ignition controls and 12 million electrode and sensor assemblies per year. Manufacturing was split between the two facilities. The company owns the 50,000-square-foot facility and although no decisions have been made yet, the building will probably be sold, Wozencraft said.
