Walk-a-Thon raises funds for Homesafe By STACY MILLBERG - Staff Writer - smillberg@starbeacon.com Star Beacon ASHTABULA — About 20 residents braved the chilly October morning temperatures Saturday to raise some money for Homesafe during its annual walk-a-thon.
This year’s event was hosted by the newly formed Friends of Homesafe group that will work as a support group for the organization, said Sherri Price, Homesafe director. The group was formed about a month ago and works on fundraising efforts and getting donations. “It’s a good organization,” said Myra Brown, one of the founding members of Friends of Homesafe. Homesafe is an emergency domestic violence shelter for women and children. It was established 30 years ago and the organization has been hosting the walk-a-thon for more than 10 years, Price said. This is the first year it was used as a fundraiser. The walk also was held in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Price said occasionally the shelter even provides services to some men if they are in a violent domestic situation. The organization operates a 24-hour crisis hotline, provides advocacy, support groups, outreach programs and referral services. The shelter also will provide food and clothing to clients at the shelter and assist them in finding housing and employment.
