JEFFERSON — Veteran quilter Virginia Howell wanted to help out county sheriff’s deputies by making adult-size coverlets for accident victims.
Howell had done similar projects a few years ago with a group of quilter friends in the Conneaut area.
Over the past months, Howell friends Ray Swartz of Hartsgrove, Ed and Karen Sylvester, and Mary Moody have been busy sewing and piecing together colorful quilts. Howell said the goal was to put enough coverlets in deputy cruisers for use in emergencies.
Moody and Howell donated a number of colorful quilts last week. On hand at Rock Creek Library to receive the Jefferson group’s quilts were road patrol administrator Lt. Greg Leonhard and Sgt. Bill Niemi. The two deputies also met later with a group of the Lakeshore Quilters, headed up by Norma Barton of Jefferson, who donated 24 special fleece blankets in separate carrying bags and a stuffed toy with each blanket.
