Plymouth asks for more signs to new bridge

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — Out-of-town visitors to the new Smolen-Gulf Covered Bridge will have an easier time finding the mammoth structure, thanks to Plymouth Township trustees.
At Tuesday’s monthly meeting, the trustees discussed working with the Ashtabula County engineer and the Ohio Department of Transportation to get additional signs, with directions, to the new covered bridge. The bridge carries State Road traffic across the Ashtabula River, and it sits on the Plymouth and Ashtabula township line.
At 613 feet, the covered bridge is the longest of its kind in the United States. The bridge is one of 16 drivable covered bridges in the county and was designed by John Smolen, former Ashtabula County engineer.
In other business, trustees:
n Moved the November meeting date from Nov. 3, which is Election Day, to Nov. 2;
n Approved repairs to the 1995 Ford ambulance;
n Agreed to draw up a proclamation and send it to Plymouth Elementary School because it was again designated an “excellent” school on the state report card; and
n Learned road superintendent Mike Wayman rented a track hoe for a month to clear the road right of way, and move ditches back, on a portion of Garrison Road East.
