ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — A buck ran out of luck early Monday at Edgewood Senior High School.
A young male deer crashed through a window of the school housing the nurse’s clinic. School officials discovered the frightened young animal at about 7:50 a.m., Principal Karl Williamson said.
“It was a small buck and it was alive,” he said. “We called the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department and a deputy helped get it out of the building.”
Williamson said the buck’s front legs appeared to be broken and the deputy “did what he had to do” outside of the school.
Students and classes were not disturbed by the incident, but Williamson said he found it a little unsettling first thing on a Monday morning.
Buckeye Local Schools Superintendent Nancy Williams said it’s possible the deer had been in the building for some time before it was discovered. Damage totaled $103 for a new window, she said.
A member of the janitorial staff cleaned the room because there was a small amount of blood from the animal in the clinic, she said.
Williams was surprised the deer jumped into the building.
“That window is three feet off the ground,” she said. “I don’t know what happened to scare it or that it saw its reflection in (the window).”
