GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Regional lawyers got a pep talk from the Ohio State Bar Association Tuesday afternoon, as OSBA President Barbara Howard delivered a message of hope and help in tough economic times.
OSBA members met at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake for breakfast and seminars that included debtor and creditor practice in a troubled economy, domestic relations and legislative issues.
The 40 lawyers in attendance are OSBA members of District 18, which serves Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake and Trumbull counties.
“The bar association offers lawyers an opportunity to meet and share ideas and continue their legal education,” OSBA representative Ken Brown said. “The members can discuss business, matters of the day and refer clients back and forth.”
The OSBA will elected new members for its board of governors, Brown said.
Howard said lawyers aren’t immune to economic woes and a member need for healthcare solutions brought the OSBA into the health care arena.
“I would say the most relevant topic today was the OSBA’s sponsorship of the new healthcare initiative,” Howard said. “In our member town hall meetings, we discuss how we can help fellow lawyers practice in this economy. The members said there were having a hard time getting health insurance for themselves and employees.”
Howard said OSBA partnered with Medical Mutual to give members a healthcare option.
“It is our job to find out what issues our members are facing in these economic times and what we can do as a bar to help,” she said.
Howard said the OSBA is proud to unveil its new website this year.
“Our Website is state-of-the-art,” she said. “It is easily one of the best in the country. It is very interactive — a virtual toolbox for lawyers.”
The Website, www.ohiobar.org, also has legal information available to the public, as well as a membership listing for referrals, Howard said.
