ASHTABULA — A fund to help the family of Jorden Elliott, the 2-year-old twin boy who died Tuesday in a house fire, has been set up at First Merit Bank, 888 Lake Ave.

Contributions to the Elliott Family Fund can be made at any branch of the bank: Ashtabula Harbor, Kingsville, Jefferson, Geneva and Madison.

There’s also a box for donations of food, clothes and toys for the family at Head Start on Main Avenue in Ashtabula to help Jorden’s six siblings.

Smoke inhalation killed Jorden of 3501 Hiawatha Ave., when fire swept through the basement at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, said James Baehr, Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office investigator.

The cause of the fire is undetermined pending forensic testing and laboratory results, and the case is still being investigated, according to the Ashtabula fire marshal, Capt. Gerald Senger.

The boy’s mother, Dannette Elliott, said Jorden was playing with toys near the washer and dryer when the fire started. She tried to get to her child, but the smoke and flames were too intense, she said.

Neighbors tried to help by breaking windows and spraying a garden hose into the basement, a family member said.

Senger said working smoke detectors in the home alerted the other family members to the fire, allowing them to escape. However, fire officials have determined improperly stored gasoline in the basement contributed to the blaze.

Dannette Elliott has said she believes the clothes dryer had caused the fire.
