ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Large trophies surrounded the six professional rib vendors lined along the lower pavilion at Lake Shore Park Saturday afternoon.
Long lines of people stood waiting for their ribs cooked by people from all over the East Coast and Midwest.
Dale Foraker, of Two Fat Guys, located in Canton, does 12 to 15 shows a year throughout four surrounding states.
Foraker said business was picking up late Saturday afternoon at the Rib Burn-Off that continues today at Lake Shore Park.
“It’s a lot of fun (but) it’s a lot of hard work,” Foraker said of the rib contest circuit.
“It’s great. It’s the first time we’ve been here. I think it’s pretty cool,” said Dan Brocklehurst of Monroe Township. He said all the ribs were sweet.
Bertha Stapleton, of Geneva, and Keith Vannater, of Harpersfield Township, were dancing away the afternoon to the tunes of the Fort Huntsburg Band.
“We always have a good time,” Stapleton said of the event between dances.
“It gets better every year,” said Brian Hubbard, a park board member that puts on the annual event.
Hubbard said there are 18 vendors selling their products at the event ranging from fudge to corn and of course ribs.
“I think its going to be bigger than last year. The weather has helped too,” Hubbard said of the Saturday attendance after a windy start Friday evening.
Several bands will play today at Lake Shore Park and vendors will be cooking up a variety of ribs.
Hubbard said the committee is already looking ahead to next year’s event. “We always find things to improve. We’ve already started a list,” he said.
