DENMARK TOWNSHIP — Three turbine jet helicopters, part of ABC’s “Good Morning America” production team, landed at Ashtabula County airport Tuesday noon.
The crews used the airport as a staging area for aerial shots seen on GMA’s live broadcast from Trumbull County on Wednesday, said David Price, Ashtabula County Airport Authority Board president.
GMA broadcast Wednesday morning from the John and Jerry Lipps family farm on Hayes Road in Gustavus Township.
“I got a chance to talk with the crews, and they were very nice,” said Price. “One of the copters ended up with needing a tire replaced. I suppose they could have used the Youngstown airport, but we were glad they landed here Tuesday noon,” he said.
Kettunen Aeronautical employees, based at the airport, helped with the repairs. One of the helicopters, Price said, had “Good Morning America” markings.
The crews flew to Erie, Pa., Tuesday to obtain video for Wednesday morning’s broadcast, he said. The flight crews also obtained aerial shots Wednesday morning of fog-shrouded farmland surrounding the Lipps family farm. The Gustavus couple’s farm was the focus of Wednesday morning’s edition of the “GMA Whistle Stop Tour,” which included a live interview with Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
