HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — Two out-of-state cars collided on Interstate 90 Monday afternoon, sending three people to area hospitals and closing the eastbound lane of traffic for 36 minutes.
The accident happened just west of the Harpersfield Township interchange when the unidentified driver of a green car rear-ended a black Ford Ranger pickup truck. Both vehicles were in motion at the time of the crash and the truck’s driver, also unidentified at the scene, lost control of his truck, Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jared Sutton said.
“On impact, the truck, which has South Carolina plates, overturned three times and came to rest on its wheels,” Sutton said. “The green car, which has New York plates, rotated 180 degrees and came to rest in the ditch on the south shoulder of the road.”
Sutton said speed was a factor in the crash and the occupants of the truck were wearing their seat belts. It is unknown if the driver of the green car was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is not a suspected factor in this crash, Sutton said.
The male and female occupants of the truck were taken to Ashtabula County Medical Center by ambulance and transferred my medical helicopter to other hospitals, Sutton said.
The truck’s roof collapsed over the driver’s head, causing some head injury. His female passenger suffered a major leg injury, Sutton said.
The driver of the green car was taken to UH-Geneva Medical Center for the treatment of unknown injuries, Sutton said.
The identities of the victims were not established at the scene due to their urgent medical conditions, Sutton said.
