Lamer will pass on city manager duty Criticism sours law director on interim job By MARK TODD - Staff Writer - mtodd@starbeacon.com Star Beacon CONNEAUT — Caustic comments aimed at Conneaut Law Director Lori Lamer the past few months apparently have killed any desire to serve as co-interim city manager, she said Tuesday.
“Criticism leveled at me personally and my office will make it extremely difficult for me to accept that position,” Lamer said. Her comments come one day after Edward Somppi, interim manager the past four months, formally announced his resignation. Somppi’s last day on the job is Sept. 5. Council President James Jones said Monday night he favors asking Lamer and Finance Director John Williams to share the duty until a full-time manager is hired. Lamer and Williams have handled that administrative chore in the past. Lamer cited the lack of support from “certain members of council” for her lack of enthusiasm. “Our department does a good job, despite what they say,” she said. Williams was away from his office Tuesday afternoon and unavailable for comment on Jones’ idea. Council actively is seeking a full-time manager to replace Douglas Lewis, who resigned in May. Members had planned to locate a manager themselves to save the cost of hiring a consultant, but a $10,000 gift from the Conneaut Community Foundation last week will help the city hire a professional to handle the task. Somppi announced his resignation with about two months left on his second three-month contract. He has declined to discuss the reason or reasons for his departure.
