JEFFERSON — The weather could not have been more perfect Friday for this year’s All-County Senior Picnic.
With the sun high in the sky, temperatures soared to near 90 degrees; but, it was cool! There was no threat of ants and a frosty breeze greeted more than 200 seniors as they gathered inside the air-conditioned Expo building at the Ashtabula County fairgrounds.
“This is great — it’s the largest turnout we have ever had,” said Troy Bailey, executive director of the Ashtabula Senior Center. “Everybody is having a good time.”
The annual event has become an important part of the summer activities for the Senior Center and this year was no exception. Once again, senior citizens were treated to a real picnic meal with hot dogs, baked beans, chocolate cake and more.
Sea shells, grass skirts, palm trees and pineapple decorations set the mood of the Hawaiian theme. Every table, the walls and even the ceiling burst with colorful flowers or palm trees.
Jefferson residents Pat Fields, Harriet Mountain and Della Laing enjoyed visiting with each other at the picnic.
“The best part is I didn’t have to serve myself,” said Minnie Lago of Ashtabula.
Ashtabula County Commissioner Dan Claypool said the picnic is a great event.
“It’s wonderful to see all these people get out,” he said.
Seniors from all over the county and several nursing homes made the trip to Jefferson for the picnic, Bailey said.
The majority of the seniors were female and 74 or older, according to the sign-in sheets.
Judy Witt, program director at the Ashtabula Senior Center, said she appreciates the fair board donating the use of the building for the picnic. The commissioners donated the cost of the air conditioning.
As in the years past, Valley Foods provided the hot dogs, buns, potato salad, baked beans, watermelon cup, beverages and a cake. There were door prizes, entertainment, games and bingo.
