ORWELL — Grand Valley Public Library recently ended its summer reading program for both children and adults, says Andrew Davis, library director. A multi-generational end of summer reading was done with Country Neighbor Program Inc. in Orwell.
CNP provided the room and a picnic lunch for the children, parents and senior citizens. Davis said the children brought can goods to donate to the CNP food pantry. Entertainment was provided by Joe McCormack, a professional puppeteer for more than 30 years with the Cuyahoga County Public Library system.
“I felt our young adults really shouldn’t be the only ones to have all the fun in the summer, so our staff offered adults to join as well to read books and fill out a registration slip with their name, address, and e-mail each time they checked out a book,” Davis said.
The number of children registering for the program was 77, who were from three years of age up through 12th grade in high school. Children in grades 1-12 read a total of 539 hours and those younger in preschool or kindergarten were required to take a book home weekly, Davis said adding 122 adults registered as participants.
Prizes for the library summer program were donated by Fairpoint Communications, Capp’s Pizza, Pam’s Hair Magic, Pine Lake Campgrounds, Claire Clark, and ACD Distributions. Others donating were Jeannette Gage, a Mary Kay consultant, and Lora Strazinsky, Creative Memories Scrapbooking consultant.
