Cutting hair for the cure

— GENEVA — Cindy Brydle took her 30th birthday seriously, marking the beginning of her third decade with a call to her doctor.
“I scheduled a mammogram,” Brydle said. “Breast cancer runs in my family, and I’m not taking any chances.”
A stylist at Mane Streeks and Tanning on Main Street, Brydle and her colleagues tapped shears and snipped away at the second annual “cut-a-thon” for breast cancer.
To honor breast cancer survivors and those struggling with the disease, the stylists raised money for the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure, which will be held Sept. 21 at Geneva High School.
Cost for the haircuts was $10, but the stylists donated all the proceeds from other services to the cause, too.
Brittany Brandt, 12, of Jefferson, received a new hairstyle from stylist Josefa Cantu just in time to go back to school. Brandt is excited about starting the seventh grade but is nervous about attending the high school.
“I kind of wanted a whole new look,” she said.
Mane Streeks regular customer Carrie Winchell of Austinburg Township said she appreciates what the stylists do to help other women.
“This is a really good cause,” she said.
Brydle said her grandmother, mother and aunt all suffered from breast cancer and a relapse of the disease killed her grandmother.
“I have always been very aware of breast cancer and its place in my family history,” Brydle said. “We have a high percentage of breast cancer in the community, and that awareness might save my own life someday,” she said.
Brydle also will participate in the Walk for the Cure, which begins at noon at Geneva High School. The balloon launch is at 1:55 p.m. and the walk begins at 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by UH-Geneva and UH-Conneaut medical centers.
