Retired ’Bula band director seeks musicians By DORIS COOK - Staff Writer Star Beacon SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Retired high school band director Hector Martinez, of Ashtabula, has his baton and fancy suit all ready for leading the alumni band at Lakeside High’s first football game Aug. 29. The only piece left to the puzzle is getting more former alumni band members to come to practices in the next week.
A practice night is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in Lakeside High School’s band room. Martinez’s daughter, Diana Perry, said she’s been calling former school mates from the years her dad led the band program at old Ashtabula High School. “It’s been sort of a tradition for the alumni musicians to join in with my dad directing for this first game. I was a majorette in high school those years,” Perry said. For the past five years the alumni musicians have performed together for the first LHS football game. However, at the first practice only eight people showed up. Martinez retired in 1989 after teaching music in city schools for 35 years. For 25 years he served as the AHS band director, his daughter said. Perry said she’s contemplating getting her baton out to join other majorettes if enough alumni members turn out for rehearsals. Two more practices are scheduled for Aug. 21 and 25. For more information call Martinez at 440-964-3807 or show up with instruments and batons for the rehearsals.
