ROME TOWNSHIP - - To commemorate the township's bicentennial, the Rome Township Post Office will offer a special postage cancellation.
Postmaster Terry Healan said the cancellation will have a depiction of the historic Rome Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1836. In order to get the cancellation, customers will have to come into the post office and ask for it, h
"This is not something that happens arbitrarily," Healan said.
The cancellation will be available for 30 days and is of particular interest to a lot of stamp collectors, he said.
"People actually collect these cancellations," Healan said. "I've already had a call from someone in New Jersey."
An office can apply for a special cancellation to commemorate a special event through the U.S. Postal Service headquarters, he said. The cancellations are done by hand in the office, rather than by machine. The cancellation is announced in the postal newsletter, and various stamp collecting magazines tend to pick up on it, he said.
There is no additional charge for the cancellation, but there must be postage attached to the item receiving the cancellation, he said.
"I can't just stamp a piece of paper," Healan said.
A special cancellation was available through all post office stations for the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Healan said he received requests from various foreign countries and is curious to see where the farthest request will come from for this cancellation.
"It's kind of neat," Healan said. "It's something we get to do that's unique for the community."
