JEFFERSON
—
It’s time to say goodbye to the old Jefferson Elementary School.
Next week, the bulldozers and dump trucks will begin to demolish the school, located at the corner of East Jefferson and Market streets.
The Jefferson Area Local School Board awarded the $425,000 bid for demolition, Friday morning, to Clemson Excavating of Rock Creek. Clemson was the low bidder, according to school board records.
Most of the building — the oldest section dates to the mid-1860s — will be demolished. The newest wing of the school, which includes a cafeteria and three classrooms, was built 10 years ago and will be preserved until a buyer comes forward, Superintendent Doug Hladek said. The demolition is expected to be complete by summer’s end, he said.
“We hope once the (newest wing of the school) is surrounded by grass, and with the playground nearby, it will sell,” he said.
The village of Jefferson now owns the playground and equipment.
Contents of the old school were sold during a public sale earlier this year.
During Friday’s meeting, the school board also awarded the final technology contracts for the junior-senior high school. These last contracts include all that’s necessary to hook up computers and voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) telephone systems, which will go online this fall. Warwick Communications of Cleveland will install the VoIP phone lines for $52,329, and the network electronics package contract was awarded to Doan Pyramid of Bedford Heights for $271,547, according to school records.
VoIP technology allows telephones to be wired using Internet connections, Hladek said. Similar systems are online at the new Jefferson Elementary School, located just south of the new junior-senior high school.
The computer package for the school was awarded to Seneca Data Systems of Syracuse, N.Y., at $208,330, records show.
Many contractors bid on the technology package, Hladek said.
Construction of the new school is now in its final stages. The Ohio School Facilities Commission, as well as local voters, provided the $32 million in funding, according to the district. The exterior brick work is finished, and the interior is progressing rapidly. School officials plan to open the 162,000-square-foot school in early October.
Outside, 120 yards of artificial turf are down on the new football field and ready for the first Jefferson Falcons football game, slated for Aug. 28.
“I just love showing it off,” Hladek said. “It is so exciting.”
