MONROE TOWNSHIP — A public hearing to discuss Monroe Township’s proposed zoning code will be held at 7 p.m. today at the township garage, 5578 S. Monroe Center Road.
The public will have a chance to ask questions about the code, which could appear on the township’s November ballot. Township trustees are expected to place the issue formally on the ballot at a regular meeting next month, said Charles Riley, trustee chairman.
“It’s our intention to approve it and put it on the ballot at our next regular meeting (Aug. 12),” he said. “We’re ready to move forward.”
A citizens committee created in 2005 prepared the 211-page document, which aims to be the first code governing land use in Monroe’s history. Voters have defeated other attempts to enact zoning restrictions.
The latest effort has generated a lot of conversation within the township, Riley said. “We’re expecting a good crowd.” he said.
The proposed code is very respectful of Monroe’s rural roots and gives a lot of leeway to a wide range of agricultural land uses, zoning commission members have said. Many activities and businesses already operating in the township will be allowed to continue under the proposed code, members have said.
