Riffe said he is amazed and humbled by the outpouring of support during the shelter quarantine.
"The day after the Star Beacon article ran, I sat at my desk with tears in my eyes as I watched people donate more than 100 gallons of bleach, 20 bottles of detergent, bottles of dish soap, towels, gloves - - the list goes on," Riffe said. "I am so thankful to everyone who took notice of our dilemma and helped our county's animals."
The shelter also received more than $800 in donations to help with the $6,000 parvo outbreak bill, Riffe said.
Parvo isn't a shelter disease, as veterinarians across the state and county are reporting an alarming number of cases, Riffe said.
"Local vets are reporting case after case of parvo. So this is something within the area, not just the shelter," Riffe said. "I'm not sure why, but this has hit Ashtabula County hard." But the shelter outbreak did have a positive impact, Riffe said.
"After our story on parvo, local vets reported that people were going in to get their dogs checked and ensuring their vaccines were up to date. We are so pleased that in this time of tragedy people in our county really took a hold on their animal's care," he said.
The APL shelter, located at 5970 Green Road, is open every day but Wednesday, from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
The APL Mall Adoption Center is open at the Ashtabula Mall every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
