GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — A sweet breeze off the familiar water of Lake Erie carried the voices of old friends through Geneva Township Park Sunday as 70 years of Geneva history lived and breathed and remembered.

The Spencer All-Class Reunion brings classes 1938 through 1961 together every year for an afternoon of memories and camaraderie.

“I am always amazed at how many people carve this day in their calendar every year,” event coordinator Charlotte Hunt said. “It is important to them to keep our memories of Platt R. Spencer School alive.”

The reunion is held on the fourth Sunday in July every year, Hunt said.

June Phelps Horner, class of 1949, said her class of 20 graduates is still close-knit.

“There were 20 in our graduating class, and there are 10 of us left,” she said. “Twelve of us went from first grade through (grade) 12 together.”

Norma Kosier Gersper, also class of 1949, loved the school basketball games, where she was a scorekeeper.

“It is hard for kids today to understand what keeps the old classes together as friends,” Gersper said. “We didn’t have cliques; we were all just one big group of friends. When we got in trouble, all 20 us got in trouble. We did everything together.”

Horner said she fondly remembers her days as a Spencer Wildcats cheerleader, but some things have changed since she graduated 59 years ago.

“I certainly can’t jump around now,” she said.
