Howland Local Schools Board of Education Monday chose Grand Valley Local Schools Superintendent John Sheets to be the district's next superintendent.
"The vote was 5-0," said Tom Krispinsky, Howland BOE treasurer. "The board believes he was the best candidate."
Sheets, who has been at Grand Valley for seven years, will start his new duties Aug. 1.
"I'm very excited the Howland board has confidence in my abilities," Sheets said. "Howland has a tradition of excellent schools."
Howland Superintendent John Rubesich is leaving July 31 to become superintendent of the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center in Jefferson.
The Grand Valley School Board will meet again Monday to accept Sheets' resignation. The board then most likely will work with the Educational Service Center to find a replacement for Sheets.
Sheets applied for the Howland superintendent position about two months ago when Rubesich announced he was leaving. This will be the second time Sheets has replaced Rubesich, who led Grand Valley before going to Howland seven years ago.
Sheets makes his home in Trumbull County and before becoming superintendent at Grand Valley, he was assistant principal and athletic director at LaBrae High School in Leavittsburg.
"In some ways, it's like going home again. But Grand Valley has been good to me," he said. "I still say Grand Valley is one of the best-kept secrets in Ashtabula County."
