Solicitor says deduct fee and put it into streets

ROCK CREEK — Village Solicitor Jamie Callender must have been feeling a little generous Monday, as he offered to deduct a portion of the village’s unpaid legal fees to go toward temporary repairs of Jefferson Street.
Callender said if the village paid off the $15,000 in past due bills within the next 60 days, he would deduct $2,000, as long as council agreed to put the money in the road fund and take care of some much-needed repairs on Jefferson Street.
The poor condition of Jefferson Street has been a regular topic at council meetings for quite some time. The full repair of the road is contingent upon whether the village is awarded a community development block grant, which the county has applied for on behalf of the village.
Village Administrator John Casalina said the last day to lay asphalt is Oct. 30. The village should find out about the grant by Sept. 1. If the village is not awarded the grant, Casalina said repairs will have to wait until next year.
“I don’t care what you put down there,” said Mike Winchell, Jefferson Street resident.
