TRUMBULL TOWNSHIP — All hail Sir Jack of Avaloch.
“I’m a real knight now, you know,” Jack Harker, 6, announced proudly as he stepped forward with his wooden sword. “Don’t mess with me.”
Jack of East Palestine and his father, John, spent the day at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire Sunday, enjoying time of old and toys of old.
“See my sword?” Jack said. “It is awesome.”
While Jack engaged in play hand-to-hand combat with his friend Mark, 10, of Boardman, Mark’s dad, Darryl, recounted some embarrassing encounters with wenches.
“The wenches and my dad were my favorite thing!” Mark said.
“Yeah, the wenches got me good and embarrassed,” Darryl Miller said. “They made me go up on stage and, well, lets just say I got embarrassed.”
Tammy Sabatino and husband, Toby, of Garrettsville are long-time re-enactors, but the birth of daughter Kayla, 3, slowed down their passion for all things renaissance.
The pair dressed in period clothing pieced together from their days of fun.
“This is our second time here,” Tammy Sabatino said. “Coming back here is like a blast from the past. It brings back a lot of good memories.”
The Sabatinos even had a renaissance-themed wedding and bought their wedding bands at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire.
Trinity and Hartley Potase enjoyed a day of medieval fun with parents John and Sharon of Greenville, Pa.
“My daddy volunteered to go up with the wenches and they made him put on underwear!” Trinity, 6, said. “He looked really silly.”
The year isn’t over for the faire, as the themed weekends continue for two more weeks. The Pirate Invasion with pirates, vikings and warlords begins Saturday. All ages can participate in the pirate costume contest and children can board the swash buckling pirate adventure ship.
It’s a Roman holiday Aug. 2 and 3 with a toga contest and the Circo Famiglia Zoppé.
