ASHTABULA — On the outside, Antoin Braxton appeared to be smiling.
In reality, the 11-year-old was gritting his teeth and kicking his leg in nervous anticipation of meeting a new friend at Jungle Terry’s show Friday afternoon at the Ashtabula Public Library.
“Here’s Daisy Mae,” Jungle Terry said, holding the black-and-white skunk up in the air so all 150 children could get a good look.
Then, Jungle Terry jokingly raised Daisy Mae’s tail and made a “Pssst” sound, scaring the children and adults in the audience. Luckily, Daisy Mae was de-skunk-tified!
“Hold her like a kitty,” Terry told Antoin — the “lucky” audience member who got to pet the skunk.
Antoin wasn’t the only child chosen to participate in the hour-long show. About a dozen other children held or touched the animals, and everyone, absolutely everyone, seemed to shout or holler answers in response to Terry’s questions. The library overflowed with children and adults craning to see the show.
Terry came prepared to entertain, delighting the crowd with a gray chinchilla, an African pigmy hedgehog, and an assortment of birds.
Robbie Williams, 4, of Ashtabula, was “just the right size” to hold a baby bird, Terry said.
And, he did — very gently.
But then the children really got cranked up when Terry said the words “reptiles” and “bugs.”
They screamed with joy.
First out of the box was a tarantula named “Rosie.”
Two box turtles followed by a rather large tortoise to wrap up the show.
Youth services director, Barb Tack, reminded the children to check out books on animals.
Jungle Terry and his fantastic animal friends will be at the Geneva Library at 3:30 p.m. July 31.
