CONNEAUT — One month after more than 300 teens and adults repaired dozens of area houses, another group of volunteers will spend a week continuing the charitable work.

Loving Equally All Families, an effort of several local churches, has lined up a small army of volunteers to help paint, repair, clean and spruce up some 70 homes in the Conneaut area, said Don Palm, the event’s coordinator.

The week-long program begins today, he said.

Some 95 people are involved in the fourth annual LEAF program, including laborers and kitchen help, Palm said. Many of the helpers are members of the sponsor churches, which include Lakeview United Methodist, East Conneaut United Methodist, Amboy United Methodist, First United Methodist, St. Mary and St. Frances Cabrini parish, Four Square Gospel and Bethelem Fellowship.

LEAF workers will tackle a variety of projects, ranging from roofing and drywall work to carpentry and cleaning chores, Palm said. “We have a lot of smaller projects this year,” he said.

The program comes on the heels of last month’s successful TeenServe campaign, which brought young people from around the country to repair more than 80 houses in the northeast corner of the county. For the LEAF project, nearly every home is in the Conneaut area, Palm said.

Even with TeenServe’s efforts, there are still plenty of properties that could use a helping hand, Palm said.

“I wasn’t worried about that,” he said. “There’s a lot of need out there.”
