Garage Sale Bonanza to benefit 12 local charities

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Volunteers are gearing up for the annual Garage Sale Bonanza, held each year to benefit many local charities.
This year’s sale will be held July 11-13 with a preview night July 10. The event, in its ninth year, is held in the former Big Lots building in the Saybrook Plaza on Route 20.
The event began as a fundraiser for the Wellness and Total Learning Center. It was held in a three-car garage its first year and has substantially grown into a much larger event, said Dick Mueller, event chairman. Next weekend’s sale will benefit 12 local charitable organizations including the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League, the David Bowan III Scholarship Fund, Faith in Action Caregivers, Foster Parents Association, Friends of Children's Services, Habitat For Humanity, Help Me Grow, Homesafe, Lions Club of Geneva, Living! With Cancer Support Group, Spiderweb of Jefferson and the Wellness and Total Learning Center.
Funds raised at the sale are divided equally between the 12 charities.
Items such as furniture, toys, Christmas items, kitchen items and appliances, DVDs, CDs, thousands of cassette tapes, video tapes and exercise equipment will be featured at the sale among many others.
“The store is literally packed to the roof with merchandise,” Chairman Dick Mueller said. “We have so much stuff that we will be adding new items to the tables every day of the sale. The diversity of the items is amazing. We truly have something for everyone.”
The preview sale will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost for preview night is $10. The Best Stuff corner, which is an antiques store inside the Garage Sale Bonanza, will be back with all the nicest donated antiques and collectibles.
“Our Best Stuff volunteer has done an amazing job of displaying the antiques and collectibles,” Mueller said. “It really looks like an antiques store, but with better prices, of course.”
The sale is different than most garage sales. Everything is organized as if shoppers were walking into a department store. The only difference is the prices, Mueller said.
The event also will feature a food court and bake sale. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
