CONNEAUT — Conneaut is tossing a birthday party for America this holiday weekend, and everyone is invited.
Food, rides, music and entertainment are on the agenda for the annual Fourth of July Festival returning to Lakeview Park on Park Avenue. The event begins Thursday afternoon and closes late Sunday night with a big fireworks display along lakefront.
The festival’s committee has been working for months on the 2008 version, said Tom Udell, coordinator.
“It’s all coming together,” he said. “Everyone should have a lot of fun.”
Vendors and local organizations will sell food and souvenirs, and concessionaires will offer games of chance and rides for young and old.
Entertainment will be featured each night on the festival stage, including another edition of “Conneaut Idol,” sponsored by the local Dairy Queen rRestaurant. Three judges will evaluate contestants over three nights, capped by Sunday night’s finals.
A parade will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, traveling from the area of Conneaut High School to the festival via Jackson, Broad and Erie streets.
The city’s fireworks display will be held at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Thousands of dollars’ worth of fireworks will be shot into the sky in the vicinity of the Conneaut Harbor sandbar, near Lakeview Park and Township Park.
Donations and proceeds from last year’s festival helped purchase the display, Udell said.
Thursday’s opening night agenda is devoted to contests, starting with three separate pageants for young girls. The Patriotic Pet contest allows Fido or Kitty a chance to show off their best holiday garb.
The festival midway will be open from 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday and 3 to 11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The schedule includes:
THURSDAY
• 4:30 p.m. — Opening ceremonies with a color guard from American Legion Cowle Post 151
• 6 p.m. — Little Lady Liberty pageant (ages 18 months to 3 years)
