CONNEAUT — Demolition of Conneaut’s Municipal Stadium will begin once permits are in hand, school officials said Tuesday.
Various permits, including environmental sign-offs, are needed before the wrecking ball visits the crumbling stadium, said Wallace “Sonny” Heinonen, Conneaut Board of Education president.
Board members, at a Monday meeting, agreed to pay $14,700 to Schwartz Construction of Conneaut to flatten the stadium, erected in the 1930s. At the same meeting, board members accepted a bid of $48,874 from Dave York Sports of Kentucky to erect bleachers that will replace the concrete seats.
The stadium’s pending demise was put on the fast track two months ago, when officials learned no company would insure the structure because of its bad condition. Board members issued the execution order after learning the stadium would need $100,000 in upgrades before it could be insured.
Barring snags, the old stadium should be just a memory by July 10, said Kent Houston, Conneaut Area City Schools’ superintendent. Concrete for the new bleachers will be poured either in late July or early August, he said.
The goal is to have the new seats in place in time for the Conneaut High School Spartans’ home football opener on Aug. 28, Houston said.
“We have a tight timeline, but it can be done,” he said.
Money for the work will come from a special board-created fund that contains money from the sale of school property, including the old Lakeview Elementary site, Houston said.
