ASHTABULA — There’s fresh paint on a several buildings along Lake Avenue, which has nothing to do with beautifying Ashtabula.
School officials, church members and business owners scrambled Tuesday to cover up some freshly sprayed hate-filled graffiti. The worst of the vandalism included obscenity, gang slang and symbols for anarchism, police reports show.
The vandalism and graffiti showed up at 4:25 a.m. Monday and continued to be discovered by dozens more residents and business owners along Lake Avenue, Bridge Street and Goodwill Drive, according to police reports. The police department tallied 12 reports of vandalism by the end of the day.
Police believe all or most of the graffiti was drawn by the same person or group of people, as the symbols, words and paint colors are the same or similar, police reports show.
When vandals strike, Police Chief Robert Stell said he increases patrols in affected areas.
This destructive rampage comes a week after someone damaged a sign and scribbled graffiti on the cement at Point Park in the Ashtabula Harbor. Police are investigating the incidents, reports show.
Anyone who sees someone suspicious or suspicious activity should call the police (440-992-7172).
