JEFFERSON — The smell of smoked, barbecued ribs and chicken drifted down West Jefferson Street Saturday as music played and children peeked into the game tents at Jefferson Days.
Dark skies and the low rumble of thunder kept some people away, but not sisters Chace and Chance Omeara of Jefferson.
Chace, 8, said she won two fish at the Ping-Pong toss Friday night and couldn’t wait to come back for another shot at fish ownership.
“I love the french fries here, too.” Chace said. “They are the best.”
Chance, 4, won prizes at the pop the balloon tent. Dad Dennis Omeara said he looks forward to spending time with the girls at small festivals.
“We come every year,” he said. “We live right down the road and Jefferson Days is something great to do during the summer.”
Event organizer Patty Fisher said the threat of bad weather wouldn’t keep die-hard Jefferson residents from visiting their favorite festival.
“We had 26 kids in the frog jumping contest,” Fisher said. “The food here is great and the vendors are familiar because they come back year after year. The kids love the bouncy blow-up tents.”
Proceeds from Jefferson Days benefits the Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, which uses the money for scholarships and to promote the village, Fisher said.
“This is a community event for the community. It is always great to see people enjoying the activities and the food,” she said.
Jefferson Days continues today at noon with a community yard sale in community park until 6 p.m., a quilt demonstration, kids games until 4 p.m., the Mahoning Valley Button Box Club in the gazebo until 2 p.m., face painting in the library until 5 p.m., kids relays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Scribbles and Giggles on the stage from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., a classic car show from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Quick Change from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the stage.
