Lovers’ quarrel ends with damaged car

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — A lovers' quarrel took a wrong turn Saturday afternoon, landing the driver's vehicle on the wrong side of the law.
According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old Ashtabula man and a 21-year-old Geneva woman argued as the man drove his vehicle westbound on Route 531 at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The woman sat in the backseat, and as their fighting grew more intense, the man drove his 1998 silver Pontiac Grand Am off of the right side of the road, two-tenths of a mile west of Ninevah Road, according to OHP Trooper Dan Jesse.
When the driver tried to stop, the brakes locked and the car ran up into a lakeside resident's front yard and slammed into some landscaping rocks, according to OHP reports. The accident heavily damaged the right front wheel and wheel assembly of the vehicle, Jesse said.
The woman exited the car and started walking west on Route 531, Jesse said.
"He chased her on foot," he said. "He caught her."
According to a 49-year-old passerby, who stopped to help, when the driver caught up with his girlfriend, he shoved her hard, Jesse said.
"He almost knocked her over," Jesse said. "But he denies it, she denies it."
The crash is still under investigation and Jesse said he is forwarding the accident report to the Ashtabula City Solicitor's office Monday for possible charges, including failure to control.
The accident caused no property damage to the homeowner.
