RICHMOND TOWNSHIP — It was blunt force trauma to the head and neck as a result of a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of 12-year-old Alexis Kittelson, Mentor-on-the-Lake, late Thursday afternoon, according to the preliminary autopsy reports from Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.
Kittelson died after being ejected from a sports utility vehicle at about 5:12 p.m. in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Stanhope-Kelloggsville and Footville-Richmond roads, said Jim Baehr, coroner’s investigator.
Alexis died at the scene, he said.
A preliminary investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol, Saybrook Post, shows the 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Rebecca A. Kittelson, 35, was southbound on Stanhope-Kelloggsville Road and pulled into the path of a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Mark L. Stillwagon, 23, of Dorset Township, which was eastbound on Footville-Richmond Road. Stillwagon struck Kittelson’s Blazer forcing it into an Amish buggy driven by Christ E. Zook, 22, of Andover, who was stopped on Stanhope-Kelloggsville Road heading northbound.
Rebecca A. Kittelson sustained no injuries in the crash. She had four passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Alyssa Kittelson, 16, sustained no injuries, two sons, Sean Kittelson, 6, and Andrew Kittelson, 10, were flown from the scene by MedEvac to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown, according to a OHP press release.
According to the OHP reports, Alyssa, who was the front seat passenger did have her safety belt on, but all three children in the back seat including the fatality victim, Alexis, were not wearing safety belts.
Stillwagon was transported from the scene with non-life threatening injuries to St. Joseph’s Clinic in Andover. Zook sustained no injuries in the crash.
The crash is still under investigation by the OHP-Saybrook Post.
