Six departments battle Andover Township barn fire By DORIS COOK - Staff Writer Star Beacon ANDOVER TOWNSHIP — Two volunteer fire departments from Pennsylvania, plus three from south Ashtabula County, joined Andover volunteer firefighters to put out a barn fire at 6412 Woodward Road Tuesday night.
Andover Fire Chief Doug Jones said the two-story barn was engulfed in flames as Andover firefighters arrived shortly after getting the call at 8:15 p.m. The barn was completely destroyed by the flames. Jones said the building was empty except for a small amount of hay. “We had it under control in about 45 minutes, but it burned completely down. We’ve not determined the cause of the fire, but it does not look suspicious,” the chief said. Departments responding to the mutual-aid call were North Shenango and Linesville departments from Pennsylvania, located across the Pymatuning Lake Causeway. Other firefighters providing assistance with their tanker units, were from Pierpont, Dorset and Monroe townships. “We had to use a water shuttle operation because the closest dry hydrant was three miles away from the scene,” Jones explained. The property owner, Bart Sly, was not home at the time. Jones was unable to estimate the extent of money damages involved.
