Locks keep getting stolen, then thieves steal baseballs

— GENEVA — Call it the case of the keyless capers.
A series of thefts at Kiwanis Community Park have local officials scratching their heads and wondering, “Why would anyone want to steal a lock?” city recreation director Myke Anderson said.
For weeks Anderson has added several new locks to the sports shed at Kiwanis Park on Route 84 and for weeks the thieves have used bolt cutters to steal the locks, Anderson said.
“They never stole anything else, just the locks. Actually, we kind of laughed about it. Who would want just the locks?” she said. “We went through numerous locks and finally the shed was left unlocked for several days.”
Thieves took advantage of the sports shed’s unsecured status to steal a dozen softballs used for the Geneva Adult Softball League. The balls were stolen, but some gardening equipment stored in the shed was left behind, Geneva police reports show.
Cost for the stolen balls is $54, Anderson said.
“Don’t worry, the game will go on,” Anderson said. “It’s just a shame to have this happen.”
