ORWELL - - It was a festive day at Grand Valley Elementary School as sombreros and salsa music filled the school's cafeteria.
It was the ninth annual volunteer appreciation luncheon for the high school, middle school and elementary school volunteers.
Each principal was asked to submit the names of volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty during the school year, said Lisa Moodt, district treasurer. Moodt assisted Arleen Kovats, administrative assistant to the superintendent, who organized the luncheon.
There were 36 volunteers invited to the luncheon. Volunteers were given sombreros and received fiesta party favors.
"Welcome to the annual volunteer luncheon," said Grand Valley Superintendent John Sheets, who got into the fiesta mood by wearing a sombrero. "This is our way of showing appreciation for all the work you do throughout the year."
After lunch, the principals said a few words about each volunteer as they handed out certificates of appreciation.
Each volunteer then played a game of picking numbers to receive a prize donated by an area business or school organization.
