ASHTABULA - - A suspect, who police say raped a 15-year-old girl at knifepoint Tuesday afternoon in the West 39th Street area, remains in jail today on a $150,000 bond, according to Municipal Court records.
Shortly after the girl described her attacker, police arrested Michael Sheffey, 41, of 4507 West Ave., according to Ashtabula Police Department reports.
"It was some nice police work," Capt. Gerald Cornelius said.
Sheffey faces two counts of rape, which are first-degree felonies, court officials.
Police would not release any more information because the matter is still under investigation, Cornelius said.
This isn't Sheffey's first run-in with the law. Ashtabula police arrested him in November and he was charged with robbery, and indicted shortly thereafter by the Ashtabula County Grand Jury. A hearing is scheduled July 2 in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Vettel's courtroom, records show.
In June 2006, Sheffey was found guilty of criminal trespassing, Municipal Court records show.
Sheffey has had more than a dozen encounters with the Ashtabula Police Department since 1991 and his criminal record can be viewed at www.ashtabulamunicourt.com.
