CONNEAUT - - One of Ashtabula County's oldest open-air markets is back in business, selling home-grown food and commodities.
The Conneaut Farmers Market has launched it's 2007 season in the parking lot of the Conneaut Moose Club at the corner of Broad Street and Park Avenue, a few steps from the Lake Erie shore.
The market expects to set up shop between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Saturday, said Jo Anne Seavey, one of three market managers. "We hope to go well into October, weather permitting," she said.
A handful of vendors are now selling plants, bakery and other items, but their numbers will explode when the growing season hits it's stride, Seavey said. "Come the first of July, we'll be very busy," she said.
For many years, the market was located in the parking lot of the former Conneaut Savings and Loan. More recently, the market could be found at Rite-Aid and the Conneaut Human Resources Center before landing at the Moose last year.
"It's a much better location," Seavey said. "There's more traffic and the lake is a beautiful sight."
Vendors must agree to sell produce or products grown in Ashtabula County. The policy ensures the freshest vegetables, eggs, cheese and other commodities, Seavey said. Often the vegetables sold on Saturdays were harvested earlier in the day, she said.
Any grower is welcome to set up a stand at the market, even casual gardeners who have a surplus of produce, Seavey said. For information, contact Seavey at 599-8684 or Katy Wentzel at 594-1782.
