ASHTABULA - - Ashtabula City Council Ward 5 seat vacated by Chris McClure will be filled by former councilman James Trisket.

Members of the Republican Precinct Committee met Wednesday afternoon to choose who would take McClure's seat. Trisket, Charles Hauff and Gordon Van Allen, all Republicans, showed interest by submitting resumes. Committee members David Adams, McClure himself, Eric Johnson and Crystal Wright spent about an hour reviewing the resumes and deciding who would serve the citizens of Ward 5.

Trisket said he felt fine after receiving the telephone call informing him he had been appointed. From 1997 to 2001, Trisket served on city council and was ready to run for a second term. Family issues were more important at the time, so Trisket just finished out his term, he said.

"It was a tough time because I was unopposed during the primary and had to walk away," he said.

Someone stepped up at that time to run, to ensure the seat on the council was filled, and now Trisket is pleased to return the favor, he said.

"I really enjoy being a part of local government," Trisket said. "It gives me the opportunity to have a better understanding of what is happening in the community."

Trisket will be sworn in officially by city council later.

McClure, whom Trisket is replacing, took office in January 2005, after Ward 5 Republican Precinct Committee members unanimously voted for him to fill the seat vacated by Sue Zaebst-Beacon. McClure resigned from the seat because he is moving out of the ward and no longer can serve as the Ward 5 councilman. Now, Trisket will fill the term, until it expires December 2009.
