Program received a contract to create up to 150 jobs for young adults ages 16 to 24 this summer.
The funding comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 as part of federal Economic Stimulus Program funding. If every summer worker puts in all the hours that they are scheduled, this program should collectively put more than $250,000 in their pockets. According to Jeff Seth, ACJVS supervisor, “Now all that we need (are) 150 young people ready, willing and able to work for the summer.” The program, called GET Opportunities, will have jobs available around the county at private businesses and public agencies for young men and women. Seth reports that “veterans, their spouses and their children, as well as dislocated workers who have not yet reached their 25th birthday, will receive preference and are encouraged to apply. No special skills or training (is) required for the vast majority of the jobs.” Participants will be paid $7.30 to $10 per hour depending on their age and experience and the job requirements. All summer workers will have the opportunity to work up to 30 hours per week for up to eight weeks between June 22 and Aug. 21, if they are returning to high school or college. Young adults aged 18 or older who are no longer in school (could be graduates or not attending) have a special training option available to them, which could extend their participation to March 31, 2010. In addition to the opportunity to work and to learn “how” to work successfully, all summer workers also will receive tutoring in either academic subjects (Ohio Graduation Test, math or reading skills), a job-search/ work-readiness skill area or in career research. This instruction/ counseling will be part of the 30-hour workweek. Workers still in high school who may be attending summer school still may participate. Every attempt will be made to find a work site willing to work around their school schedule. Participants attending summer school may not be able to work 30 hours a week while school is in session. Applications can be obtained at a number of locations around the county and must be returned to the Job Source, 2247 Lake Ave, Ashtabula, OH 44047 by 4:30 p.m. Monday, June 1. A parent or guardian must sign the application if their child is under the age of 18. Applications can be picked up at any of the following locations: in Ashtabula, at The Job Source, 2247 Lake Ave.; the Ashtabula County Department of Job and Family Services offices at both the Donahoe Center and at 4332 Main Ave.; Ashtabula County Children’s Services in the Donahoe Center; and at the Ashtabula Arts Center, 2928 W. 13th St. In Conneaut, applications can be picked up at the Conneaut Human Resources Center, 327 Mill St.; in Geneva, at the Geneva City Hall, 44 N. Forest St.; in Jefferson, at the Jefferson Community Center, 11 E. Jefferson St.; in Orwell, at Country Neighbor, 39 S. Maple St.; and in Andover, at the Andover Public Library. Completing an application fully and returning it to the Job Source by June 1 is just the first step. The law stipulates certain eligibility requirements in order to qualify. yO! staff will do a preliminary review of each application to determine eligibility, and all applicants will receive a response.
