Lakeside High School to add classes and expand library By SHELLEY TERRY - Staff Writer - sterry@starbeacon.com Star Beacon SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Lakeside High School will be adding several new classes to its curriculum this fall.
Principal Sylvia Atkinson said school officials found a way to accomplish this goal despite minimal funds — “by eliminating study halls and utilizing the expertise of our own staff.” The new classes will include: Japanese, ACT/SAT Prep, Ohio Graduation Test Prep for Reading/Writing, Ohio Graduation Test Prep for Math, Ohio Graduation Test Prep for Science, Ohio Graduation Test Prep for Social Studies, Theater Media Production, Forensic Science, Astronomy, Creative Writing (semester), Poetry (semester), and Guitar. Lakeside High School will require summer independent work for all Honor/Advance Placement classes to avoid review at the beginning of the school year. Assignments must be successfully completed by the established due date to remain in the classes. Lakeside High School also will participate in a new initiative that pairs LHS teachers with Kent State University professors, thus enabling students to gain college credits upon meeting the requirements established. Come fall, the high school will provide staffing to allow students to utilize the library services during school and a limited time prior and after the school day. Funding from the Isabelle Day Trust allowed school officials to purchase $35,000 worth of library books for the 2007-08 school year. “These books will greatly expand the first section of the books ordered from the Follett Library Resources Company last year for a total of $20,000,” Atkinson said. “On July 1, we will purchase an additional $35,000 of library books. This will provide us with the recommended selections for a high school library.”
