Conneaut Public Library set to celebrate its 10th anniversary

CONNEAUT — Staff at the Conneaut Public Library have prepared a day-long party Monday to celebrate the library’s 10th anniversary.
The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until 7:30 p.m., organizers said.
Special commemorative bookmarks and prizes will be distributed during the day and refreshments will be served. Harpist Sue Kreig-Shugerts will play between 5 and 7 p.m.
Drawings of the library submitted by students will be on display. Visitors will vote on their favorites Monday, and the top choices will be transformed into bookmarks.
On May 17, 1998, after one year of construction, the doors opened on the $2.3 million building at 304 Buffalo St. The new library took shape at a spot one block north of the Carnegie Public Library building on State Street, which had been home to the city’s public book collection since 1909.
Conneaut has embraced the new library, said Gail Connors, director. “It’s an excellent fit for the community,” she said.
The new building boasts a community room that is in constant use, Connors said. It possesses an extensive archive section and more than 15 computer stations — compared to two at the old Carnegie location.
Another plus — it’s all on one floor, creating easy access for the elderly and disabled. The Carnegie building required visitors to climb a steep set of stairs to reach the entrance and other staircases to access parts of the collection.
Folks who have been away from Conneaut for a while give the library glowing reviews, Connors said. “People always remark how nice the building looks,” she said.
