CONNEAUT — Several scholastic sports threatened with extinction next school year have been saved, thanks in part to the support of the Conneaut Community Foundation.
The foundation, which assists civic-minded projects and agencies, will match every dollar donated to the Save Our Sports program, up to $20,000, organizers said. CCF’s involvement will secure the $55,000 needed to retain endangered sports programs at Conneaut High School and Conneaut Middle School.
Mike Sanford, who launched the SOS initiative, was gratified by CCF’s announcement and the community response, in general.
“The outpouring of support has been overwhelming,” he said Thursday. “It shows what you can do when a group works together.”
Counting the CCF’s involvement, Sanford’s group met its target with more than two weeks to spare before a June 2 deadline.
“We’ve achieved our goal with everything that’s been pledged,” he said.
The failure of an emergency levy in March had doomed the high school’s soccer, wrestling, tennis and golf programs, as well as wrestling, track and tennis at the middle school for the 2008-09 school year. In response, SOS was created to raise money needed to fund those programs for one year.
“It’s a temporary fix,” Sanford said.
A few more fundraisers are ahead for the SOS effort. Money raised in excess of the goal will come off the CCF endowment, Sanford said.
“We promised to raise no more than $55,000, and that’s what we’ll do,” he said.
CCF officials, in a statement, said they were pleased to aid the campaign.
“(CCF) recognizes the importance of the schools in our community,” according to the statement. “Long term, the passage of a school levy is essential for the success of all Conneaut children. Short term, the SOS has provided the children and the schools with a funding solution for sports.”
Contributions sent to CCF for use as matching funds are tax-exempt. Donations in check form should be made out to Conneaut Community Foundation, SOS project, and mailed to Conneaut Community Foundation, P.O. Box 668, Conneaut, 44030. Deadline is May 31.
For information, contact the CCF by telephone (599-8004) or e-mail (CCF@suite224.net).
