Zappitelli expects to depart before July By MARK TODD - Staff Writer - mtodd@starbeacon.com Star Beacon CONNEAUT — Mary Zappitelli expects to step down as superintendent of the Conneaut Area City Schools district before the end of June, she said Wednesday night.
Zappitelli confirmed a few weeks ago she has accepted an offer to steer the Geneva school district. It’s believed Geneva’s school board will formally hire her at its regular meeting next week. Even though one more regular meeting remains before the end of her tenure, a few board members made farewell comments at Wednesday’s meeting. Nicholas Iarocci called her a “wonderful superintendent and an incredible person.” Iarocci, in mock anger, said he is upset that Geneva has robbed the district of two administrators in less than a year. Last summer, former Conneaut High School principal Kent Houston was hired by the district. It’s a compliment that Conneaut creates administrators other districts covet, Iarocci said. On Thursday, board president Michael Kennedy said a handful of applicants for the job have surfaced. The selection process is being handled by the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center. In other business, the board learned the district will receive a $400,000 grant to retain its Reading First program. The money will hire additional reading specialists who will expand the program to grades 4-12. The program shows teachers different ways to teach reading, an initiative aimed at boosting state reading test scores. Elsewhere, the board: n Approved the resignation due to retirement of first-grade teacher Audrey Dummond after 30 years in the classroom; and intervention specialist Gail Kenyon n Accepted the resignation due to retirement of Ken Jury, custodian for 23 years n Approved 40 supplemental contracts for 2008-2009 aimed at coaches and club and activities advisers.
